Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez, Sean Kinney, Layne Staley His torn-up vocals are the passionate lifeblood of this acoustic set, fuelling the uneasy darkness of Rooster and delivering the lonesome howl that makes this rendition of Down In a Hole unforgettable. Inez and drummer Sean Kinney did pay tribute to Metallica, however, playing the intro to their hit song "Enter Sandman" just before "Sludge Factory" and the Intro to "Battery" before "Angry Chair" (this can be heard on the CD and the DVD). Original Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley shines in this powerful performance, which would be one of his last live appearances ever. Mike Inez's bass had the phrase "Friends Don't Let Friends Get Friends Haircuts." written on it, directed at the members of Metallica who were in the audience and had recently cut their hair short. The performance featured some of the band's highest charting singles, including "Down in a Hole", "Heaven Beside You", and "Would?", and introduced a new song, "The Killer Is Me". The show marked Alice in Chains' first appearance as a five-piece band, adding second guitarist Scott Olson. It is often hailed as one of the most memorable editions of MTV Unplugged, with a reputation comparable to the famous editions featuring Nirvana, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan. The performance was one of the band's final appearances with vocalist Layne Staley. The album was re-released as a CD/DVD package on September 18, 2007. I like it better than the original version MTV was not complete and useless shit. The songs "Angry Chair", "Frogs", and "The Killer Is Me" were cut from the original MTV broadcast but are included on both the CD and home video releases. The album has received platinum certification by the RIAA and the home video release has received gold certification by the RIAA. A full length DVD of the concert was also later released in 1999. A live album of the performance was released in July 1996, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, and was accompanied by a home video release. The show first aired on MTV on May 28, 1996. My heart aches for them.Alice in Chains resurfaced on Apto perform their first concert in two and a half years for MTV Unplugged, a program featuring all-acoustic set lists. Many never find a way out and hit rock bottom. Knowing that he dies from that addiction a short time later only adds to the misery. In the 1990s, MTV’s iconic Unplugged series was the final proving ground for several bands on their way to becoming legendary. I saw Alice in Chains in the early 90's, opening up for Megadeth and Anthrax, and we are looking at two different people here. A Stomach Bug Almost Killed Alice In Chains’ ‘Unplugged’ Performance. Probably high, strung out, most likely both, and his performance shows it. When he takes off his sunglasses, there is nothing behind those eyes and he is clearly way deep into addiction. On April 10, 1996, pioneering Seattle grunge metallers Alice In Chains re-emerged after a two and a half year long live show hiatus (the band didn't tour in support of 1995's Alice In Chains) to play the legendary acoustic television series MTV Unplugged. As a recovering addict myself, it is really sad to see Layne Staely up there. Visually this an extremely hard show to watch. In fact, without Jerry's vocals, where he takes the lead on many songs, this would not have been a great show and leads to my next point. ![]() The video gives you insight into how much Jerry Contrell's backing vocals contribute to the songs, both in this live video but also in retrospect, in the studio albums as well. The songs picked work beautifully in their acoustic environment and the band is as good as ever. Musically, this is one of my favorite MTV unplugged shows, along with Aerosmith and Queensryche. ![]()
